Planning a Wedding on a Strict Budget

Weddings inevitably involve money and the spending of money. If you’re planning a wedding on a very stringent budget, there are many ways to make it fabulous and cost effective.¬†Regardless of the size of your wedding, it will be a grand affair because it will be the reflection of you and your fianc√©. And really, that’s all that matters.

There are only a few key elements for a successful wedding: a marriage license, an officiant, and two willing participants. The rest is all up to you!

Start early to shop for your wedding gown. Look for sample wedding dresses. Many bridal boutiques will also have sales during the year. Look in unexpected places. Don’t be surprised if your perfect wedding dress isn’t from a bridal boutique! The same goes for finding your perfect wedding shoes. After all, white is very ‘in’.

Do your wedding invitations. Many stationary stores will have do-it-yourself kits to make your own wedding invitations within the comfort of your own home. Some couples may even opt for wedding e-cards! This will, of course, be dependent on how formal your wedding will be. (We also have an article for making your own unique invitations).

Consider making your own wedding bouquet. Some brides opt to have a single long stem rose in lieu of a traditional bouquet. One white calla lily is equally stunning. Add a ribbon to match your colour theme and you’ve got a perfect match.

Consider making your own wedding favours. Not only is this cost effective, but it will also add a personal touch to your wedding. Let your imagination run wild.

Book a wedding photographer for a specific amount of time. Supplement with candid photos taken by friends and family.

Performing your wedding ceremony at City Hall or at your nearby Civic Centre will greatly cut the cost of your wedding plans. (We have a section on getting legally married in Toronto. Click here.) Consider an outdoor wedding (or indoor, depending on space) at a friend or family’s home.

Formal dinners tend to increase costs. You can follow your wedding ceremony with a luncheon or brunch at your favourite restaurant. An afternoon tea party or cocktail event may also be suitable. You can also book private rooms at select restaurants.

Instead of a traditional wedding cake, consider those lavish creations made by local bakeries. Or, why not go for a decadent cupcake tower?

These are just some of the many possible ways to reduce costs while planning a wedding on a fixed budget. Now that we’ve unlocked your imagination, we’ll let you do the rest. Remember, it’s your wedding day. Make it yours.
